Denise Fleming

Chic Chef

There goes the old kitchen pinger and out dashes the chic chef to see if what's cooking is cooking good.

DENISE FLEMING, Glasgow housewife, is noted for the fact that she's elegantly photogenic amid her pots and pans. Some housewives sort of let themselves go all anyhow in the kitchen, but not Denise. She remains a very chic chef and her legs aren't exactly unnoticeable, either. How would you like fluffy souffle that just melts in your mouth?

Or hot Viennese schnitzel? Marry a chic chef.

Pat Booth

Travelling Oxonian

Born in Oxford twenty years ago PAT BOOTH is mad about going places. Some of us never get farther than the end of the High Street, from where the rest of the world looks strange and intimidating, and we settle down to becoming all gnarled and parochial and slightly idiotic.

Pat, however, has been all over the world, including the U.S.A. and has a remarkable insight into the way other people live. She's eaten almost every national dish you care to name and has been whistled at by mustachioed Romeos in every capital you've ever thought about.

What would you say if we told you her ambition was to trek across Mongolia on a pony? Watch out for a dish of Mongolian custard?

Sandy Blair

Poetical Pin-Up

Poetical Pin-Up

A girl must do a steady job of work in order to earn herself acceptable board and lodging, but that doesn't mean she has to become as soulless as her typewriter.

If you've got poetry in your heart, as SANDY BLAIR of Canterbury has, it can take more than a rattling commercial keyboard to smother it. Sandy likes to write poetry every spare moment she can get, and none of it starts off on the lines of 'Violets are blue. or roses are red . .

It's much more like

Ah, brooding walls of glass and lime

That soar in concrete grey

Come down, dark walls, come down

And crumble.

Sort of modern and passionate.

Sandy is a poem herself, and lovely to look at as well.

Jane McKay

Frilly Effect

JANE MCKAY, being essentially a feminine female, is just crazy about frills. Whatever the outfit, she has to include a frill somewhere, and in this case she's succumbed to the furbelows of fancy garters.

And when she feels really gay, Jane surrounds herself with masses of frilly petticoats. The jet-black stockings accentuate the colourful frills, and please don't ask for hair ribbons as well.

Teenager Jane loves all fashion's gimmicks and has the shape to make the best of all of them. 36"-22"-36". Which reminds us, we suppose you realise that in grandma's day shapes weren't mentioned? Aren't you glad this is your day and age?

Ever seen a pin-up as cute as Jane?

Catherine Brydon

Toboggan Run

With all that snow lying around on the slopes of the Highlands, Scottish housewife CATHERINE BRYDON didn't want to waste any of it. Feeling a bit exhilarated on account of having bought some fur-lined bargains at the winter sales, Catherine found her toboggan and took it for a run.

She looked lovely amid all that snow.

She went whooshing down the slopes and skidding round the curves. She fell off once or twice, much to the aesthetic satisfaction of a fellow tobogganist who was waiting to pick her up. He was a connoisseur of shapely limbs, and he hadn't seen any as aesthetically admirable as Catherine's since last winter, when his girlfriend fell headfirst into a snow drift.

"Don't miss anything, will you?" said Catherine.

"Not if can help it," said he.

Jennifer Taylor

Looking For a Lamb

Anticipating the early arrival of spring, JENNIFER APRIL ANN TAYLOR went looking for a lamb.

The farmer's creaking old shepherd went looking for his rum flask. He was once a sailor, but he still left things lying about.

Jennifer didn't find any lambs; it was a bit too early.

The old shepherd didn't find his rum flask, either, but he found Jennifer. They came face to face in a misty meadow.

"Great cucumbers,'" said the old shepherd, "who needs rum, me beauty?"

“Good grief," said Jennifer, breaking into a fast trot, "who needs help? I do."

But as she leapt the gate the old shepherd lurched into it, and she was saved by the bong. He didn't come to until Jennifer was safely home and eating shepherd's pie.

Melanie Cooper

Fun In The Sun

There's no doubt about it, said Big Garth to Little Garth, when the sun is flaming hot, you feel more like fun than you do when it's flaming freezing. You're so right, spoke up MELANIE COOPER before Little Garth could get word in, the sun just makes you feel terribly gay.

Little Garth then said there was nothing terrible about it, so Big Garth hit him over his bonce with a large fist, and with hardly another sound Little Garth was driven deep into the soft sand dune.

Oh, that was funny, said Melanie, where did Little Garth go to?

Up spoke the almost muffled voice of Little Garth. I say, it isn't half dark down here.
