Dawn Grayson and Penny Winters

Plain and Fancy - Modern Life 1968

Footless and fancy free used to be a popular expression, but with the coming of the new mod fashions, fancy is no longer free it is in strong competition with the plain sheer stocking. On these and on the following pages, MODern Life presents, from London, England. Dawn Grayson and Penny Winters in the battle of the Stockings. Dawn, wearing the plain, sheer stockings, is one of London's top models. Penny, in plaid stockings, is one of England's leading strippers.

The battle is on. Here Penny and Dawn face each other. Dawn leads with long, leggy advance with no holds barred. Penny on the other hand, counters with a foot-on-bench and peeka-boo lead.

Not to be out manoeuvred, Dawn returns with a full body attack with arms high, chest out, stomach in and knees bent. Here Dawn excels in classic body style. On the other hand, Penny relaxes and awaits the opportunity to counter. She extends her long lead and covers up with her fancy gams close to her chest. Then, to confuse her opponent, she drops into a chair, but she keeps her fancy stockings out in front of her. The straight attack may be best, she observes, as she stands fully erect in the centre of the arena. But no matter how you look at it. the battle of the stockings appears to be a draw.

Realizing that the battle may end in a draw, both girls open up. Penny opens up with a straight right to the patterned stocking. Then raising her skirt high she exposes the full extent of her ability. Dawn, taking advantage of her opponent's strategy, crosses her right over to the top of her left plain, sheer stocking.

As the contest draws to a close, both contestants expose their finer points. Dawn with a right to her head and a left to permit her plain, sheer stocking to score. Penny turns to her left and scores with a right to her patterned stocking. The winner? There are none.

Denise Baker

Dishy Denise

Girl with dreamy brown eyes is DENISE BAKER, a very dishy addition to the London scene, and if you've got a girlfriend just like her, aren't you lucky? You don't have to spend rainy days sticking stamps in your album, you can call her up and have some scintillating crosstalk. How are you on telephonic crosstalk?

Susanne Ferrier

Dolly Bird From Scotland

They're with it in Scotland, you know. In their kilts they've been swinging since Bonnie Prince Charlie. London has only recently caught up.

Shorthand-typist SUSANNE FERRIER is as eye-catching a dolly bird as any in the King's Road. She lives in a Glasgow suburb and commutes daily to and from the city centre.

She's a keen swimmer and is naturally a swinger when it comes to dancing at the Glasgow discotheques.

She confesses she loves conversation. That's a bit different from so many who adore the goggle-box.

What a lovely evening you could spend chatting her up. Susanne's vitalistics are 36-22-37.

Seen around the home, Susanne makes just the kind of leggy picture that's getting lamentably scarcer. The fashion fanatics don't know what they're doing to us with their stretch tights.

Hazel Shaw

Bubbly Blonde

If you know any blonde who's livelier than HAZEL SHAW, you know a blonde who's so bubbly she's liable to go off pop. Hazel simply bounces through each day in her work as a photographic model, leaving some photographers breathless from the effect of trying to contain a leaping rainbow. It's also like trying to lasso a leprechaun, but it's lots of fun, and it's better than photographing still life.

Heather Armfield

Can Spring Be Far Away

The fanfare heralding the arrival of spring seems ready to sound any moment when you see HEATHER ARMFIELD looking so vibrant amid all that foliage.

Heather is a receptionist and a real dolly.

She's so gorgeous she ought to be kept in diamonds and furs, and have her husband buy her a yacht as well, and if it doesn't work out that way someone is falling down on his responsibilities.

Dollies who look like radiant springtime are made to be spoiled. If you're too hard-up to spoil yours excessively, write a her a poem.

Judy Rodger

Judy

GIRL who's always sure of a warm welcome from us and our readers is JUDY RODGER. Judy's the model with all the know-how on looking good, and there's no know-how we'd rather have than that, unless it's the know-how on the presence of oil in virgin ground going for a nickel an acre.

Number one asset shapely legs.

Judy's to be found at nearly all the major exhibitions, demonstrating anything from a potato-peeler to the very latest in streamlined cars.

Nice enough, but what chance does a potato-peeler stand against a demonstrator as cute as Judy?

Susan Douglas

The Bees and the Bird

There was a lot of humming going on. The bees were out and after the honey. There was a nice svelte bird around. SUSAN DOUGLAS. So, there were the bees and the bird and the honey. Along came a bloke on a bike, he liked honey and loved birds.

"I'll come and join you," he said, "I need somewhere to prop my bike."

Well, he wasn't a morose type, he was someone to talk to and Susan likes a chat. So, they had a nice chat and the bees had a good hum and that's how to make the world go round instead of blowing it up.

Sally Anne

Dear Mr Editor

My Christian names are Sally Anne, I'm married to the nicest man, and thinking that you'd like to see I've sent these photographs of me. I hope you'll think I'm rather swish and not an oldeworldie miss, it’s just that when the cold comes on, I like to wear my undies long.

I love my warm directoires, yes. call them my D.K.'s, no less.

I think it's really cosy fun To wear D.K.'s all cute and long, In warmth and comfort they're a dream, So please don't say I look a scream.

In fact, you know, D.K.'s are now all the rage and such a wow, believe me truly, if you can. They don't look better on a man!

Denise Fleming

Chic Chef

There goes the old kitchen pinger and out dashes the chic chef to see if what's cooking is cooking good.

DENISE FLEMING, Glasgow housewife, is noted for the fact that she's elegantly photogenic amid her pots and pans. Some housewives sort of let themselves go all anyhow in the kitchen, but not Denise. She remains a very chic chef and her legs aren't exactly unnoticeable, either. How would you like fluffy souffle that just melts in your mouth?

Or hot Viennese schnitzel? Marry a chic chef.

Pat Booth

Travelling Oxonian

Born in Oxford twenty years ago PAT BOOTH is mad about going places. Some of us never get farther than the end of the High Street, from where the rest of the world looks strange and intimidating, and we settle down to becoming all gnarled and parochial and slightly idiotic.

Pat, however, has been all over the world, including the U.S.A. and has a remarkable insight into the way other people live. She's eaten almost every national dish you care to name and has been whistled at by mustachioed Romeos in every capital you've ever thought about.

What would you say if we told you her ambition was to trek across Mongolia on a pony? Watch out for a dish of Mongolian custard?

Sandy Blair

Poetical Pin-Up

Poetical Pin-Up

A girl must do a steady job of work in order to earn herself acceptable board and lodging, but that doesn't mean she has to become as soulless as her typewriter.

If you've got poetry in your heart, as SANDY BLAIR of Canterbury has, it can take more than a rattling commercial keyboard to smother it. Sandy likes to write poetry every spare moment she can get, and none of it starts off on the lines of 'Violets are blue. or roses are red . .

It's much more like

Ah, brooding walls of glass and lime

That soar in concrete grey

Come down, dark walls, come down

And crumble.

Sort of modern and passionate.

Sandy is a poem herself, and lovely to look at as well.
